Sometimes a vest just won't stay on straight! Whether your scout is climbing trees or painting outdoors, it's always flapping around and sliding off. What about at those cold sales booths? Wouldn't it be great to be able to proudly and correctly display your vest over a puffy coat?
A *separating* zipper (this is important!)
A strong sewing machine
A zipper presser foot designed for your machine
A coordinating and/or invisible thread
About 30 minutes
And, a vest, like this one:
So let's talk zippers. Some zippers separate fully at the bottom - like ones on jackets, mostly, while some don't - purses, pants, etc. It's VERY important to use a zipper that is marked *separating* for this project. Otherwise you won't be able to open your vest!
For this project, I wanted to use a zipper from the Fairy Stash, but I didn't have one that was exactly Daisy blue, so I choose the contrasting yellow, which coordinates nicely with the Daisy yellow insignia.
Also important - a zipper foot -- make sure to get one that fits your machine!
Note that the zipper foot shown here has a relatively narrow front tab, and notches near the center where the needle goes up and down. This unique shape lets you sew really close to the teeth of the zipper without getting all tangled up! This is essential!
And another Badge Fairy must-have item: lab tape! I couldn't do what I do without this stuff. (I wrote about it in an earlier post.) It's very similar to masking tape, but sturdier. It can be sewn through, and leaves no sticky goo - Y'all know how I feel about goo!
I lay the vest down, inside out with the front of the vest open slightly. This opening represents how much zipper will show through when zipped up.

Let's take it to the machine! The rest of these pictures use a brownie vest!
See how the needle, zipper, foot, and vest are all aligned just right for a perfect run of stitches? Stitch down both left and right sides. On the side of the zipper with the pull, sew up to about an inch from it, and then carefully pull and wiggle it up behind the foot. Once it is safely out of the way, go ahead and sew to the end. Run some extra reinforcing stitches on the ends - it will be pulled on a lot! Flip to the inside and remove any tape that is still there.
There you go - a zip up vest!
She loves it!
